Interior Paint Finishes
High-gloss, matte, eggshell; what does it all mean? You may want to paint an entire room using a high-gloss finish because you like how it looks, but you'll lose that loving feeling shortly when you have to do some touching up. Higher sheens are more durable but much less forgiving of imperfections and flaws. Here's a breakdown of the different paint finishes and the best use for each:
- Flat: A flat finish paint has zero sheen and doesn't reflect any light. This allows more pigment to come through, which is great for concealing imperfections on your walls. While it offers a flawless appearance, flat paint is suggested only in low-traffic areas because it cannot withstand frequent cleaning.
- Matte: Matte finish paint is similar to flat because it offers incredible hide and color depth but is slightly more durable. The extra dimension makes a big difference and gives bedrooms and formal dining rooms a luxe aesthetic.
- Eggshell: Like its namesake, an eggshell finish has a low luster but reflects just enough light to give colors a glamorous glow. Eggshell is one of the most popular finishes used in homes because it's a neutral choice and easy to clean.
- Pearl: A medium-gloss finish with solid durability, the pearl finish is suitable for higher-traffic areas. However, be aware that it is more prone to showing mistakes made while painting, such as lap marks.
- Satin: Paint with a satin finish is often confused with eggshell, but satin paint is more glossy and offers increased durability and stain resistance. It's attention-grabbing without being too loud, making it great for trim and interior doors.
- Semi-Gloss: Semi-gloss finishes are perfect for drawing attention to unique architecture and adding dimension to trim. It's got enough sheen to create a presence but still looks right at home on kitchen cabinets.
- High-Gloss: Mirror, mirror, on the wall, which paint is the glossiest of them all? A high-gloss sheen delivers an ornate shine and is the most durable of the paint finishes. It's an ideal selection for trim and accent walls. If you're going the high-gloss route, we suggest leaving it to a professional or being prepared for lots of trial and error. Because the finish reflects so much light, it will highlight and accentuate even the smallest imperfections on the surface.
