Exterior Paint Prep
Since it’s much more difficult to fix exterior paint mistakes than interior ones, proper preparation is essential. These are a few of the most important rules to follow when painting the outside of your house:
- Paint doesn’t adhere to dirt, so thoroughly clean the surface before painting. Don’t apply paint immediately after washing, as paint doesn’t stick to damp substrates.
- Start at the top and work your way down. This method helps prevent unsightly streaks and drip marks.
- Check the forecast before you set a date to paint. Ideally, there will be no rain for two days before and three to five days after painting. The time of day also makes a difference. Avoid painting in the middle of the day because direct sun will cause the paint to dry too quickly. This will result in uneven application and insufficient curing.
- Mix all cans of the same color in a bucket to ensure uniform color. This strategy, known as “boxing,” is one professional painters swear by.
