Exterior Paint

Painting your home’s exterior is no small undertaking. Getting it right is essential because mistakes will be on display if you don’t. Premium paint and tools are a must-have for fantastic results, and Benjamin Moore is among the industry’s best. Superior Paint & Decorating has been an authorized Benjamin Moore dealer since 1985, so we know a thing or two about exterior paint and are happy to share our knowledge with you.

Exterior Paint Finishes

The outside of your house has to withstand much more than interior surfaces, so choosing the right finish for the job is important. Each finish is particularly suited for a particular exterior paint job, and we’ll help you choose the best one for yours.

  • Flat: Flat finish paint has no sheen and is a good choice for siding and brick. It’s easy to apply and touch up and hides minor imperfections.
  • Low Luster: Choose a low-luster paint if you want a finish with slightly more sheen than flat paint. The finish can stand up to cleaning and makes an excellent paint for siding and brick.
  • Soft Gloss: The next step up in shine, soft gloss paint dries to a hard, durable finish. It offers exceptional dirt and stain resistance, making it a good choice for doors, shutters, and trim.
  • Semi-Gloss: This sleek, glossy finish is perfect when you want your home’s exterior to stand out. Semi-gloss is incredibly durable and another excellent paint for doors, trim, and shutters. Both soft gloss and semi-gloss paint must be carefully applied as higher sheens show mistakes more prominently.
  • Satin: Satin is the most versatile exterior paint finish. It’s durable and offers a subtle pearly sheen. A satin paint resists dirt and stains and is an outstanding paint choice for nearly any exterior surface.

Exterior Paint Prep

Since it’s much more difficult to fix exterior paint mistakes than interior ones, proper preparation is essential. These are a few of the most important rules to follow when painting the outside of your house:

  • Paint doesn’t adhere to dirt, so thoroughly clean the surface before painting. Don’t apply paint immediately after washing, as paint doesn’t stick to damp substrates.
  • Start at the top and work your way down. This method helps prevent unsightly streaks and drip marks.
  • Check the forecast before you set a date to paint. Ideally, there will be no rain for two days before and three to five days after painting. The time of day also makes a difference. Avoid painting in the middle of the day because direct sun will cause the paint to dry too quickly. This will result in uneven application and insufficient curing.
  • Mix all cans of the same color in a bucket to ensure uniform color. This strategy, known as “boxing,” is one professional painters swear by.
